Production Perfected

Roland’s fastest, most powerful large-format color printer ever, the new SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 represents the next generation in large-format digital printing quality, precision and performance. With its two inline, mirrored print heads, integrated printing and contour-cutting technology, and new, environmentally friendly Eco-Sol MAX 2 inks (including light black, metallic silver and high-density white), the Pro 4 delivers greater productivity and unsurpassed image quality. It’s both an exceptional value and the ultimate production tool. The highly versatile, easy to use Pro 4 lets you create colorful, vibrant large-format banners, signs, vehicle graphics, decals, POP displays, heat transfers for decorated apparel, and more with maximum speed and efficiency.

State of the Art Print Engine

The XR-640 large-format color printer incorporates the latest in inkjet technology design. It features two 8-channel piezo inkjet heads with 180 nozzles per channel. The print heads are arranged in an inline formation with seven different droplet sizes, allowing for smoother gradations and richer density for photographic and high-resolution vector output. Configured in a mirrored pattern through seven colors, in any of the four ink configurations, chromatic banding is virtually eliminated in bi-directional printing.

High-Speed Printing

With print speeds of up to 528 sq. ft. (49 m2/h) per hour for CMYK applications, as well as print/cut capability, the XR-640 expedites the production cycle by allowing you to print and contour cut your designs together – even unattended – in one easy, seamless step.

Print/Cut Advantage

The XR-640 large-format printer/cutter streamlines the production process by automatically contour cutting printed graphics. This integrated system eliminates the need to reload and reposition graphics, saving valuable time and effort. For cutting laminated graphics, the Quadralign four-point optical registration system automatically realigns the cutting path and compensates for media skew and distortion. With its included TU-2 take-up system and integrated contour-cutting, this large-format color printer is capable of performing long, unattended print runs. The Pro 4 can also function as a stand-alone vinyl cutter.

A Choice of Seven or Eight-Color Printing

The XR-640 offers a choice of seven or eight-color printing. Choose from the following ink configurations, depending on your needs:

Eco-Sol MAX 2 Ink

Roland’s new, high-definition Eco-Sol MAX 2 eco-solvent inks are specially designed to optimize image quality and color on a wide range of coated and uncoated media. Like Roland’s original Eco-Sol MAX inks, the new Eco-Sol MAX 2 inks are environmentally friendly and virtually odorless, so there’s no need for special air filtration systems. Eco-Sol MAX 2 inks are also nickel-free for a healthier work environment. Inks are packaged in convenient 440 ml cartridges (White and silver available in 220 ml cartridges only) and are water, scratch and UV resistant up to three years outdoors*. Combined with variable droplet technology, Roland Eco-Sol MAX 2 inks deliver more brilliant color with superb detail in the highlights and smoother blends and transitions overall.

*Outdoor durability is based on accelerated weather tests. Results may vary depending upon location and application. Dry times vary depending on specific media characteristics. Lamination may be required for some applications or environmental conditions

Low Running Costs

Eco-Sol MAX 2 inks boost the performance of the XR-640 at low running costs that both you and your customers will appreciate. For a low-density image, we estimate an average of R15 per square meter. and an average media cost of R15 per square meter for a total of R30 per square meter. For a high-density image, we estimate an average ink cost of R35 per square meter and an average media cost of R15 per square meter for a total of R50 per square meter.

Automated Ink Circulation System

Ink CirculationThe Pro 4 XR-640 comes standard with Roland’s Automated Ink Circulation System to prevent the pigments in metallic silver and white inks from settling. Designed to reduce waste of white and metallic silver ink, the circulation system dramatically lowers running costs while ensuring exceptional image quality throughout the longest production runs.

VersaWorks RIP Software

Developed exclusively for Roland inkjet printers, and printer/cutters, VersaWorks RIP software takes full advantage of the Pro 4’s capabilities. Based on the latest Adobe CPSI 3019 engine, VersaWorks includes advanced error diffusion and 16-bit rendering for exceptional production output and unmatched ease-of-use, and is fully compatible with Windows® 7, Vista and XP. Along with features such as variable data printing, embedded ICC support, ink level adjustment tools and advanced cropping, tiling and nesting options; the newest VersaWorks features include the following:
Predictive Ink Calculator and Alert: For flawless unattended printing, a predictive ink calculator estimates the amount of ink needed for each job. When there is not sufficient ink to complete a job, the RIP notifies the operator prior to printing.
Spot Color Replacement Tool: Allows an operator to specify Roland colors directly in VersaWorks without the need to spend a great deal of time re-opening the source file to make changes.
Built-in PANTONE® Spot Color Library: This new library helps streamline the conversion process from PANTONE® to CMYK colors and ensures accurate PANTONE® color matching.

Roland OnSupport™

Roland’s OnSupport online production monitor enables remote tracking of production so you can receive an e-mail notification when ink is running low or a job is finished.

High-Speed Network Connection

Equipped with a 100 Base-TX/10 Base-T interface, the Pro 4 connects seamlessly to office networks without additional software, achieving an increased data transmission rate of 100 MB/sec. This makes it easy to configure a highly-efficient printing environment.

Advanced Media Handling

The Pro 4 XR-640 is a true production large-format color printer. It features an upgraded media feed and take-up system that accommodates rolls of up to 88 pounds (40 kg) for long, unattended printing. Adjustable print heads enable you to accommodate various media thicknesses.

Integrated Tri-Heater System

The Pro 4 XR-640’s integrated tri-heater system dries prints quickly even in high-speed modes for immediate finishing, installation or collection by the take-up system. The system features three components: a pre-heater that improves media receptiveness, a print heater to accelerate ink fastness and brightness, and a dryer to accelerate the drying process and improve productivity, workability and scratch resistance. All can be controlled from either the printer panel or Roland VersaWorks.

Optional DU-640 Dryer

Optional DU-640 DryerThe DU-640 Heater/Blower is offered as an option for the XR-640 and offers users several advantages, including the ability to print highly saturated images at full speed while using the take-up rollers. Image transfer and sticking caused by rolling up wet images are eliminated. For increased media feeding accuracy during print/cut operations, the DU-640 also enables users to take full advantage of all the XR-640 pinch rollers. The DU-640 is required for printing with white and metallic inks.
